Chicago, IL (PRWEB) October 20, 2010 —
Aqua, a building offering Chicago condos for sale, continues to break boundaries. Designed by Jeanne Gang, Magellan Development’s famed mixed-use high-rise Aqua in downtown Chicago is one of the tallest buildings in the world designed by a female lead architect, and it was recently nominated as one of the five finalists for the four-year old International Highrise Award.
The award’s judging committee, based in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, chose five finalists including Chicago’s Aqua, Dubai’s Burg Khalifa, Tokyo’s Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower, Bangkok’s The Met and Shanghai’s Shanghai World Financial Center. Each building considered must be more than 100 meters (328 feet) high, and this year 27 high-rises from 16 countries were nominated for the award based on pioneering design, aesthetics, urban setting integration, sustainability, innovative technology and cost efficiency.
Aqua, which was recently awarded Skyscraper of the Year by Emporis, certainly excels in many of these criteria. In addition to its wide range of amenities—including an 80,000- square-foot eco-friendly outdoor deck and a veritable city within a city inside—the building was designed specifically for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. Among other green aspects, its unique wave-like design of alternating-width curving balconies makes it more recognizable by birds, drastically reducing the number of birds flying into the building. As for the interior, the building boasts bamboo flooring, a renewable resource, and Hanstone Quartz countertops, which is a non-porous material inhibiting bacterial growth harmful to air quality.
The high-rise’s location in Lakeshore East and its unique design offers spectacular views of downtown Chicago, specifically breathtaking scenes of Lake Michigan and Millennium Park, both of which are a short walk from the building.
The building is not finished breaking boundaries, though. Soon, Carlson Hotels will develop the United States’ first Radisson Blu in Aqua. This upscale hotel chain plans to begin with its flagship in Aqua then spread throughout major U.S. cities.
The award, along with EUR 50,000 as prize money, will be awarded in Frankfurt’s Paulskirche at a ceremony on Nov. 5, 2010.
