Pismo Beach hotel is doing its part to fight preventable diseases in the United States and more than 30 countries worldwide through a program that sanitizes and sterilizes discarded hotel amenities including bar soap and shampoo.

Just one week's worth of bar soap collections from the Pismo Lighthouse Suites for the Clean the World soap recycling program.

“We are very proud to take part in a program that truly has a two-fold benefit to this planet,” says Erik Mund, General Manager at the Pismo Lighthouse Suites. “ We're doing our part to keep waste out of landfills and helping impoverished families.

The luxury Bath and Body Works amenities used by guests at the Pismo Lighthouse Suites now have a second life in helping impoverished people worldwide thanks to an innovative soap-recycling program.

The Pismo Lighthouse Suites is the first hotel on the Central Coast of California to join the Clean the World program. General Manager Erik Mund discovered the program upon reading about the company’s efforts to ship soap to aid in the earthquake relief in Haiti. After researching the feasibility of implementing the program for the Pismo Lighthouse Suites, it proved to be a simple modification to the regular housekeeping procedures and it was implemented in the beginning of September.

The discarded amenities from the hotel’s 70 two-room, two-bath suites are shipped to the Clean the World headquarters in Florida for processing. The soaps are disinfected and sanitized and then provided to a network of global distribution partnerships including Floating Doctors, Cap Haitian Health Network in Haiti, World Vision and countless homeless shelters, women’s shelters and missions in the United States. “Each day around the globe, more than 9 thousand children under age 5 die from acute respiratory illness and diarrheal disease – the top killers of children worldwide,” according to Shawn Seipler, executive director of Clean the World. “Both are preventable, in large part, by washing with bar soap. That gives an added sense of urgency to our mission.”

The Pismo Lighthouse Suites is the first hotel in the Martin Resorts collection to adopt this program. The program has already made a positive impact with the staff and guests of the hotel and Martin Resorts will be implementing the program for its four additional hotels by the end of this year. The program fits right into the Martin Resorts culture of giving back. For the second year, Martin Resorts showed its support to keep our local beaches beautiful and sponsored teams from our Coastal hotels to pick up trash and debris in Avila Beach and Pismo Beach during EcoSLO’s Coastal Clean Up day, September 25th.

Clean the World has partnered with more than 400 hotel properties in 45 states and Canada and distributed 375 tons of soap worldwide. Clean the World estimates that the Pismo Lighthouse Suites will provide approximately 13,000 recycled bars of soap annually to underprivileged people in desperate need of soap through this program, while simultaneously diverting more than 1 ton of landfill waste.
