Fit Bottomed Girls Launches Weight-Loss Challenges Across the Country

Fun fitness website takes online presence into communities for real change.

Fit Bottomed Girls provides a fun and encouraging place to visit online, giving women workout tips, reviewing exercise DVDs, sharing their experiences with living a healthy life and more. However the creators of the website wanted to do more to get women living a healthy, balanced and fit lifestyle. They wanted to go beyond readers' computer screens -- and into their lives and homes.

"We get lots of stories from people changing their lives and losing weight because of being encouraged and motivated by and, but we wanted to do more for the women out there who are having a really hard time getting started," says Jennipher Walters, co-founder of Fit Bottomed Girls. "Losing weight and getting healthy can be really challenging without having accountability and help, so we wanted to create a program that allows women to have that supportive community, along with expert advice on how to lose weight once and for all."

Earlier this month, the Fit Bottomed Girls did just that with its first Weight-Loss Challenge. Launched live in Kansas City in conjunction with the nutrition club Energy Zone 151, the challenge consists of weekly two-hour classes for eight weeks. With a goal of being interactive and supportive, the classes cover topics that teach participants everything they need to know about maintaining a healthy lifestyle. From learning how to cook healthy yet tasty foods to working out at local health clubs to conquering emotional eating, the classes are both fun and thought-provoking.

"We wanted to give people an education that would not only teach them what to eat and how to work out, but also to really dive into what's holding them back and find empowering ways to give them a can-do attitude," Walters says. "Once you start believing in yourself, it's amazing what you can accomplish. We're really creating Fit Bottomed Girls here from the head down."

But the FBGs aren't just stopping at helping Kansas City women get healthy. Once the Kansas City Weight-Loss Challenge concept was announced on the website, there were so many emails and comments requesting the program across the country that a virtual FBG Weight-Loss Challenge quickly went from concept to reality.

Currently two virtual challenges are in progress -- one in Tampa and one in Horicon, Wis. -- lead by none other than FBG readers themselves. These FBG Weight-Loss Challenge Leaders are responsible for getting a group together, holding weekly meetings and facilitating discussion via a webinar done by the Fit Bottomed Girls.

"It took us awhile to figure how best to do it, but to recreate that community feel, it was really important that the virtual challenges were done in groups with an FBG liaison," Walters says. "That way the girls get the education from us, but the support and fun camaraderie from each other."

While all of the challenges are supportive in nature, there is a prize to the winner who loses the largest percentage of inches. The contents of the package will vary according to location, but each prize will be worth $1,000 or more of health and fitness goodies.

According to Walters, this is just the beginning.

"We have our sights set on getting the entire nation healthy, one town -- and one fit bottom -- at a time."
