It must be so hard to find the courage to leave an abusive home knowing you have nowhere to go
Troy, MI (Vocus) October 22, 2010
AmeriCare Medical, Inc. recently attended the “Rise and Shine” breakfast at the Townsend Hotel to support HAVEN Charity. HAVEN was founded in 1975 as the first and only sexual assault counseling center in Oakland County. In 1977, HAVEN broadened its services to include domestic violence counseling. AmeriCare Medical chose to make a sizable donation to help HAVEN make the growing changes required to continue their cause.
Today, all of the programs at HAVEN provide specialized, comprehensive services in the areas of domestic violence and sexual assault. By serving the community through a series of innovative intervention, treatment, prevention and education programs, HAVEN can help individuals and families through all stages of crisis and help work toward our goal of eliminating domestic violence and sexual assault.
Because HAVEN has become such a strong presence in the community offering shelter and counseling to the abused, guests at the Rise and Shine breakfast were informed that the HAVEN house right now is too small to accommodate all of those that come to stay. The organization is in desperate need to find a larger facility to house all those that need help. AmeriCare Medical recognizes the significant contributions that HAVEN makes to help local children and adults find the strength they need to escape an abusive home, and encourages the community to provide what they can to help HAVEN to have the capacity they need so they won’t have to turn away anyone.
“It must be so hard to find the courage to leave an abusive home knowing you have nowhere to go,” says Stacey Murphy, Vice President of Corporate Development at AmeriCare Medical. “It’s wonderful that HAVEN can provide a family with shelter and help them get back on their feet. It eliminates all the excuses of why they can’t leave.”
AmeriCare Medical urges those in the community to contribute what they can to support HAVEN’s cause. The HAVEN residential program is Oakland County’s only 24-hour emergency shelter exclusively for domestic violence or sexual assault victims and their children. Access to the shelter is available only through the Crisis and Support Line. The shelter location is “semi” secret, making it more difficult for batterers to find their significant others.
