DigitalRoute today announced that it has deployed its solution for Bill Shock Prevention at two European operators.

Bill Shock prevention measures are increasingly coming into focus for communication service providers and government agencies around the world. Concerns over mobile consumers’ lack of control over spending have been amplified by the explosive increase in smart phones and usage of data services in recent years.

In April 2009, the European Parliament voted in favor of new legislation to cut roaming charges, and introduce bill shock prevention measures. The legislation forces EU operators to introduce maximum financial limits for data roaming charges, or the corresponding data volume limit.

More recently the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently voted for public comment on a set of bill shock prevention measures that may become official regulation in the near future. It is likely that other regulatory authorities around the world will follow suit and also adopt regulations against bill shock.

Regulations aside, the negative publicity that comes with the frequent press stories about subscribers receiving extraordinary high bills should be seen as a call to action for service providers to take preventive measures.

DigitalRoute’s Bill Shock Prevention solution complies with the European Union regulations in regard to roaming usage caps and notification alerts. It has been designed so service providers can ensure subscriber satisfaction even during roaming.

The solution is based on MediationZone®, DigitalRoute’s horizontal mediation platform which combines integration of BSS Mediation, OSS/Assurance, Business Intelligence and Policy Control applications. Bill Shock prevention is a specific example of a policy control solution enabled by MediationZone.

“Implementing preventive measures for bill shock is beneficial to everyone. It encourages usage of data services through transparency and gives services providers an effective tool for end-user communication,” said Magnus Hyttsten, Chief Technology Officer of DigitalRoute.
