Governor Brewer Appoints Hotel Executive Edwin W. Leslie to Arizona Tourism Advisory Council

Bridlie Hospitality Management, Inc. CEO & President, Edwin W. Leslie, has been appointed by Governor Jan Brewer to represent Maricopa County and the cities of Scottsdale, Cave Creek and Carefree on the state-wide Arizona Tourism Advisory Council.

Leslie, has been appointed by Governor Jan Brewer to represent Maricopa County and the cities of Scottsdale, Cave Creek and Carefree on the state-wide Arizona Tourism Advisory Council. The mission of The Arizona Office Tourism is to enhance the state economy and the quality of life for all Arizonans by expanding travel activity and increasing related revenues through tourism promotion and development. Mr. Leslie, whose company operates The Carefree Resort and Conference Center, succeeded Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau President & CEO Rachel Sacco, on the board and will provide policy guidance and direction to the Arizona Office of Tourism. The Tourism Advisory Council is comprised of 15 members appointed by the governor for terms of five years. It includes representatives from recreational and tourist attractions, lodging, restaurant or food and transportation industries, as well as other tourism businesses and the general public.

The Arizona Office of Tourism is tasked with promoting tourism in Arizona and seeks to maximize the enjoyment of the many scenic landscapes, and rural and metropolitan tourist opportunities which abound in the state. The council assists and advises the agency director in preparation of the budget and in establishment of policies and programs which promote and develop tourism for this state.

Mr. Leslie’s appointment has brought with it great excitement from the area’s tourism and hospitality leadership. “Edwin will be a great addition to the Tourism Advisory Council,” said Sherry Henry, director of the Arizona Office of Tourism. “Edwin brings a wealth of hospitality marketing experience, vitality, passion and energy to the mission of the Council, the Arizona Office of Tourism and the state. Edwin W. Leslie, founder and CEO of Bridlie, began his career in the hospitality industry in 1984 with Houston, Texas-based Southwest Inns. He served as General Manager of a number of Southwest Inns properties located in southeast Texas. While with the company, Mr. Leslie received Holiday Inn’s highest honor, the Torchbearer Award, for outstanding hotel customer service and operations. Mr. Leslie left Southwest Inns to join Hilton Hotels as an operations manager, and later joined Westmont Hospitality Group based in Houston, as Special Projects Manager. Mr. Leslie worked with the Director of Operations overseeing the management of 52 hotels located throughout the United States.

Mr. Leslie is no stranger to working with high profile tourism initiatives. In 1990 Mr. Leslie served as the Director of Housing for the Economic Summit meeting of Industrialized Nations, which was held in Houston, Texas. His duties involved managing the housing needs of all of the foreign dignitaries and their supporting staff that were visiting the City for the conference. In 1991 Mr. Leslie was appointed by then Houston Mayor Kathy Whitmire to serve as the Director of Housing and Planning for the Republican National Convention which was being held in Houston in August the following year. This appointment gave Mr. Leslie oversight over all of the efforts to meet the housing and hotel needs of the attending delegates, the Secret Service Staff for then President George H.W. Bush, and officials from the various federal agencies that were providing support to the convention. For his work under this appointment, Mr. Leslie received commendations from the City of Houston, President Bush and the Director of the Secret Service.

In addition to The Arizona Tourism Advisory Council, Mr. Leslie is an active member of a number of organizations and trade associations. Mr. Leslie is on the board of three separate hotel related organizations. In addition, he is an active member of such organizations as: Meeting Planners International (MPI), American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA); and the International Association of Hotel Owners and Investors.
