Theatre Fundraising Goes Weirdly High Tech with the Only Smartphone Application that Lets You e-Mail a Scream to Your Friends

“What the heck, spend a buck on the iScream, help out Molotov Theatre Group and wake up from your daily grind with a little screaming fun,” Zavistovich said.

It’s the Halloween season, and Molotov Theatre Group, America’s second-oldest Grand Guignol theatre, has taken theatre fundraising to weird new heights with the introduction of the Google Android iScream smartphone application.

The application, which costs one dollar, allows users to email signature Molotov Theatre company member screams and show phrases, or set a “booby trap” on their phone to activate a scream when the phone is moved.

An iPhone version of the iScream application is now being reviewed by Apple for inclusion as an iPhone App Store offering in the near term.

The idea for the iScream application is Molotov’s way of bringing its gory message of horror theatre to a mass audience, one new fan at a time.

“As a theatre specializing in horror and titillation, we don’t exactly have people standing in line to offer us huge grants and endowments,” said Molotov Managing Director and Goremeister Alex Zavistovich. “The iScream application fits our weird world view, and we hope it catches the attention of the world’s fringe nightcrawler set – the kind of adventurous theatre-goer that Molotov depends on.”

Developed by Wisconsin-based high-tech wunderkind Brett Widmann, the iScream application offers a wide array of pointless and odd features, including:

  • 20+ screams or sound effects (including ‘signature’ screams from Molotov company members and memorable lines or sound effects from Molotov productions)
  • Set timed screams to go off when a friend (or victim) least expects it
  • Scare friends by setting a trap that plays a scream when your phone is moved
  • Send screams to friends via email

“What the heck, spend a buck on the iScream, help out Molotov Theatre Group and wake up from your daily grind with a little screaming fun,” Zavistovich said. “It’s just the kind of pointlessly weird thing we’re becoming known for.”

About Molotov Theatre Group
Founded in 2007, The Molotov Theatre Group is dedicated to preserving and exploring the aesthetic of the Grand Guignol, or French Theater of Horror. The Group will strive to accomplish this in two ways:

1) Through its ongoing project, “Grand Guignol DC,” to produce English translations of original Grand Guignol scripts to preserve and draw attention to this important, and essentially forgotten genre; and
2) To apply ideal from the Grand Guignol to contemporary and classic works.
The Molotov Theater Group will pursue these goals following the Grand Guignol models of employing a resident company of artists and working towards building a true rotating repertoire of plays. To our knowledge, no other company in the world is working to maintain this genre in such a traditional way.
