What if people across the globe pledged to join in prayer for just one minute at noon on the annual International Day of Peace (September 21)? In 2009, Odyssey Networks, America’s largest interfaith media coalition, asked that question and launched “A Million Minutes for Peace,” an online campaign aiming to unite the world in prayer for peace and over time to secure one million participants. The initial effort resulted in over 8,000 prayer pledges. This year that number increased tenfold, topping 100,000 pledges from people in 127 countries.

“A Million Minutes for Peace” 2010 was supported by a dedicated micro site, an award-winning PSA that aired on cable outlets in the US and internationally, a viral email campaign, and extensive outreach to a variety of local and global faith groups, organizations, schools, colleges and media outlets. Over 700 partners worked with Odyssey to gather pledges. Among them were 34 of Odyssey’s own member faith groups and organizations, along with prominent partners, including the World Peace Prayer Society, United Religions Initiative, Intersections International, the Global Peace Initiative of Women, Religions for Peace, We Are Family Foundation and FLT Films.

On September 21st, partner organizations around the world organized events centered around “A Million Minutes for Peace.” From Fellowship in Prayer’s gathering in Tiger Park, New Jersey, to William Jewel College’s Peace Pole Planting ceremony, communities came together to share in the observance of the noon prayer. For those unable to gather in person, a special online event, ‘TAKE TEN,’ brought together individuals from around the world to collectively experience the minute of prayer.
