Huntington Manor Fire Department is a local fire district serving the residents of Huntington, NY. On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, two hijacked aircraft struck the World Trade Center in what was the worst act of terrorism that our country has ever seen. With the Twin Towers ablaze, Huntington Manor Fire Department Chief and New York City RESCUE 4 Firefighter Peter Nelson responded without hesitation.
Acting with unflinching bravery, Peter, in conjunction with countless other rescuers, managed to successfully save the lives of approximately 25,000 civilians. In this final act of heroism, Peter unselfishly made the supreme sacrifice. He has left behind a legacy that will remain in our hearts forever. Like so many of the New York area fire departments, Huntington Manor Fire Department was dispatched for mutual aid to the areas left unprotected during the days that followed the attack and assisted in the rescue attempts at ground zero.
The indelible mark that these events left on the members of Huntington Manor Fire Department will last for generations to come. The daunting task of creating a memorial for those fallen heroes was quickly presented to the town and local fire committee. Starting with an engraved wall to commemorate New York Firefighters lost in the line of duty, designers presented a moving statue to provide a focal point for such a monument. With an eternal flame lit in the center of the engraved wall, the surrounding landscape became the concentration. Bob Digiose of Progressive Mason entered the project with 30 years of experience and a strong sense of community. To compliment the memorial, various other masonry work was completed around the wall and statues and it was decided the project should include walkways throughout the project and adjoining to the street and sidewalks. The paving stone of choice for both its complimentary color and structural integrity was Rinox’s Palazzo Modulo in the color Burgundy Wine. With its unique shapes and random design, it allowed Progressive Mason to provide soft walks to the memorial area and provide a lasting beauty to a heavily traveled sidewalk around the firehouse. With the main walks designed around the firehouse, adjoining walks were necessary to connect the sidewalks with the memorial area. With sweeping curves and subtle plantings to soften the area, Progressive Mason was able to provide the perfect accents to such a moving remembrance. Using the same Palazzo Modulo in Burgundy Wine color, Progressive Mason was also able to accent the border of each walkway with a more solid course of the same style stone.
The results have been admired by thousands each year who visit the area. The finishing touches were provided at the main entrance of the firehouse where a walkway was provided. Upon reaching the front door, visitors can view the true craftsmanship of Progressive Mason with a customized circle showing the Huntington Manor insignia and additional hand cut designs to remember those fallen. The results of such hard work are a breathtaking memorial that continues to shine as the years have passed. With minor maintenance, the firefighters of Huntington Manor continue to appreciate, with a strong sense of pride, the lasting memorial that separates their house from many others in the area. There you will also find some very special tributes to our Fallen Brothers, and some very special memorial gifts. You are invited to leave messages there concerning any one, or all, of our fallen heroes.
