From sweeping floors as a teen at the family business to running a financial services firm, Bill McQuaid knows what it takes to keep the lights on for small businesses

Industry veteran, Bill McQuaid, has returned to the place where his financial services career began to lead one of MassMutual’s Atlanta general agencies, Piedmont Financial Group.

McQuaid, who began his career in Atlanta as a young agent with another company, is heading back to the city as a power-hitter for MassMutual. Having worked as a sales manager and then later an assistant general agent in Virginia Beach for MassMutual, McQuaid most recently grew the company’s Providence, R.I. operation, posting unprecedented sales results for the company’s second oldest office.

“Bill McQuaid has the industry expertise and drive to help us continue to add to our footprint in the greater Atlanta area,” said John McCloskey, a MassMutual vice president with supervision of McQuaid’s agency. “His sales experience and his first-hand knowledge of the complexities small business owners face make him an asset to the region.”

McQuaid plans to focus on working with affluent professionals and small business owners to help them with their investments and their financial plans in the here-and-now and in the future.

Assessing the future is not something many families are doing as evidenced by a recent study from the insurance industry research group, LIMRA. The study found affluent households – those with an income of more than $100,000- lack sufficient life insurance coverage and one third have none at all.

“Life insurance is one of the basic building blocks of someone’s financial plan. We want to give people an opportunity to see how money works through education and outreach,” he said. “We want them to see not only where they should invest but to understand what it will take to get there. So rather then just focusing on one return someone might receive, we want them to think of the end in mind. In other words, how will their retirement look? By starting with the end in mind it is easier to guide people to where they want to be.”

McQuaid aims to transform his business into a one-stop planning shop for small and medium sized businesses in the area.

“We are going to help them create wealth in and outside their businesses,” he said, adding that many business owners are not aware of the opportunities that can exist with a product like whole-life insurance. Whole life can provide business owners with both a death benefit to protect one’s family, key employees and the business itself.

“It is our mission to work diligently to find out what is important to business owners on the local level and create plans for them based on their needs that will take into consideration the many marketplace threats that exist such as inflation, interest rates and more.”

McQuaid knows a lot about the pressures of running small businesses because he was steeped in it while growing up in New Jersey. Having worked in nearly all areas of his family’s distributing business while growing up and after college, he can attest to the both the rewards and challenges of running a business.

“When you own your own business you live and breathe it. When there was a break-in at my dad’s office in the middle of the night, he was up and there. It is an awesome responsibility,” said McQuaid. “But having the keys to the office is something I have always wanted too. Being a general agent at MassMutual allows me to do that in partnership with a strong financial partner like MassMutual. Our firm and MassMutual can help Atlanta business owners achieve financial security now and in the future.”

McQuaid lives with his wife Kathleen and their four children in Roswell.
