Hellerman Baretz Communications receives the marketing and communications industries' highest honor--a MarCom Platinum Award--for a groundbreaking social media campaign. HBC also won a MarCom Gold Award for a publicity campaign in connection with financial fraud.

When all the world is anxious about social media and how to use it to gain business, how does it feel to be considered the best in the business at developing effective social media campaigns? "Pretty darn good," said John Hellerman, whose firm, Hellerman Baretz Communications, just received the marketing and communications industries' highest honor--a MarCom Platinum Award--for a groundbreaking social media campaign.

The Association of Marketing and Communications Professionals gave HBC the award for its work on behalf of JD Supra, an online legal content distributor that was launching an application on LinkedIn. HBC developed a grassroots campaign introducing "power users" of JD Supra's legal news service to the new application--a strategy that generated extensive positive buzz. HBC also won a MarCom Gold Award for a publicity campaign in connection with financial fraud.

"Social media is a new form of communication," Hellerman said, "and the same principles that make communications effective in other areas also work in cyberspace."

The Platinum Award builds on HBC's history of leading social media work, including its creation of a national law firm's employment law blog (which receives 12,000 hits a week) structured around NBC's The Office. HBC won a MarCom Gold Award for the "That's What She Said" blog in 2007. Last year, HBC won a PR News Legal PR award for its development of an innovative press release template optimized for distribution to social media sites and bloggers.

"The legal profession has a lot of anxiety about social media, but it's nothing to be afraid of," said Hellerman, whose company conducts "Cool Coaching"™ sessions for attorneys new to LinkedIn and other networks. "Social media is here to stay, and it's how people are getting new business. We're helping them dip a toe in safely."

The annual MarCom Awards are judged by senior-level industry executives in an eight-week-long process. HBC received its 2010 Gold Award for media relations success on behalf of a white-collar defense attorney at a national law firm. In connection with a single recent news event, Goldman Sachs's settlement with the SEC, HBC's client was quoted in The Wall Street Journal, Fortune, USA Today, and the Los Angeles Times, among other publications.

"We're thrilled to receive multiple MarCom Awards in a single year," said agency co-founder Spencer Baretz. "It's a nice reflection of the maturation of our firm, our commitment to clients, and the depth of our excellent team."

HBC has now won four MarCom awards in the last four years. In addition to being honored for the "That's What She Said" blog, in 2009 HBC received a Gold Award for a campaign around veterans' rights, which resulted in a three-part feature in American Legion magazine and led to Congressional hearings. Since its founding in 2002, HBC has won more than a dozen industry awards, including honors from PR Week, the Legal Marketing Association, Bulldog Reporter, the Communicator Awards, and PR News, which named John Hellerman Agency Executive of the Year in 2008-09.

Working with the world's leading law firms, consulting firms, and financial services companies, Hellerman Baretz Communications (http://www.hellermanbaretz.com) creates PR-based business development campaigns that turn professionals' expertise into new business opportunities.
