Novel by award-winning teen published by Clear Water Press

I've always written stories, but the class gave me the tools to shape my ideas into something that keeps a reader turning pages.

What would you do if your words had power--real power--over others? This is the question teen author, Carlie Gernhart pondered as she penned the young adult novel, Fable Weaver, at age 16. Two years and several rewrites later, the book was published by Clear Water Press in June 2010.

The book’s heroine, Linnet Fairweather, is a fable weaver who, with a few words, sends errant storybook characters back to Tierra Fabula, the place characters live when their stories are over. When fiction’s worst villain escapes the prison of Tierra Fabula and begins launching evil into the real world, Linnet is forced to enter the pages of legend. The only way to prevent both worlds from spinning out of control is to face the dark sorceress in the place of her greatest power—the world of books.

The fantasy novel began as a writing assignment as part of the One Year Adventure Novel course in which Gernhart enrolled as part of her homeschool curriculum. She attributes the course with focusing her work and helping her study the craft behind writing. “I’ve always written stories, but the class gave me the tools to shape my ideas into something that keeps a reader turning pages.”

Fable Weaver was a finalist in the OYAN Student Novel Contest in 2008. Gernhart’s next novel, Kytt’s Tale won the award in 2009. Her children’s story, ARF!, won the American Royal book contest and was published in 2010.

Now at age 18, the prolific teen plans on expanding her storytelling through words and art as she majors in animation this fall at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas. Whether writing the inevitable midterm paper or penning another novel, Gernhart exhibits the fable weaver’s credo: Words have power.

Fable Weaver can be ordered online at http://www.fableweaver.com, Amazon, or direct from the publisher: Clear Water Press, PO Box 62, Olathe, KS 66051. The price is $11.99.
