Mobile Votes Contradict People Magazine's 'Sexiest' Claims

Who's the top hottie in the minds of real people? Predicto.com, the country's largest premium SMS service, asked voters to text message their choice for "Sexiest Man Alive."

...maybe People should turn to a man in uniform. Army staff sergeant Salvatore Giunta was just awarded the Medal of Honor by President Obama for placing himself in the line of fire to save two comrades. Let's see Ryan Reynolds do that!

He may not enjoy the notoriety of past cover boys like Brad Pitt or Johnny Depp. He certainly didn't have anyone campaigning for him the way two-time winner George Clooney stumped for 2007's "Sexiest Man" Matt Damon. Nevertheless, People Magazine has officially named Ryan Reynolds this year's "Sexiest Man Alive." This may disappoint participants in a mobile poll conducted by SMS leader Predicto.com, whose votes indicate that they are tired of conventionally handsome men laying claim to the dubious crown.

A buff actor, Reynolds is no doubt easy on the eyes, and it's hard to fault the magazine's logic when a starlet like Scarlett Johansson got swept off her feet by the guy. Yet after 25 years, isn't it time People changed up its judging criteria? A look back at the men who have received this honor shows they all have one thing in common: classic movie star good looks. While actors Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Hamm rated among Predicto voters' choices, the majority polled actually selected "other" when presented a list of traditionally handsome options.

Predicto's mobile poll result shouldn't come as such a surprise. Ask women what they are looking for in a man and the top answer is almost always "a great sense of humor." If that's the case, why didn't "Parks and Recreation" star Aziz Ansari or "Community"'s Joel McHale make the cover? They have audiences howling every week - and a lot of those viewers are of the female persuasion! Simply put, funny is sexy with or without the model good looks to go with it.

Another trait that women find sexy is smarts. Brains before beauty would be a compelling argument to put 26-year old Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in the "hot" seat. CNN 360 anchor Anderson Cooper could fill that seat as well. Yes, he possesses leading man good looks, but more than that, Cooper exudes intelligence and compassion. He's even got a Facebook page dedicated to him, titled "Bringing Sexy Back to CNN."

Let's not forget about the jocks. Dating back to school days, they have always been synonymous with sexy, yet not one pro athlete has ever scored People's top honor. What's hotter -- or perhaps cooler --- than LeBron James stroking a forty-foot three-pointer? Now that he's taken his talents to South Beach, the muscled NBA All-Star is likely to flex his desirability that much more.

Of course some may find fault in James' abandonment of his hometown, Cleveland. Lack of courage a turnoff? Then maybe People should turn to a man in uniform. Army staff sergeant Salvatore Giunta was just awarded the Medal of Honor by President Obama for placing himself in the line of fire to save two comrades. Let's see Ryan Reynolds do that (without the help of any CGI special effects)!
