Clean Diesel Technology for Off-Road Engines and Equipment: Tier 4 and More

The five leading off-road equipment industry associations today released answers to frequently asked questions about Tier 4 technology – the next generation of clean diesel emissions standards established by the US. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that apply to new diesel engines used in off-road equipment beginning in 2011.

The associations that collaborated with the Diesel Technology Forum (DTF) on the Tier 4 report – “Clean Diesel Technology for Off-Road Engines and Equipment: Tier 4 and More” - are:

  •     Associated Equipment Distributors (AED)
  •     Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM)
  •     American Rental Association (ARA)
  •     Farm Equipment Manufacturers Association (FEMA)
  •     North America Equipment Dealers Association (NAEDA)

“As we approach critical dates for Tier 4 implementation, many dealers and diesel equipment users have a number of questions about the new regulations,” said Allen Schaeffer, the executive director of the DTF. “In collaboration with our other industry partners, we hope this information will help ease the transition for prospective equipment owners, dealers and rental agencies and others in the off-road industry during the implementation of these new regulations.”

Among the questions addressed in the report are:

  •     How Are the New Tier 4 Engines Different From Previous Engines?
  •     Do the New Tier 4 Engines Require Different Fuel?
  •     How Will Tier 4 Engines Affect the Value of My Trade-Ins?
  •     What Additional Technician Training and Certifications Are Going to Be Needed?
  •     What Additional Dealer Diagnostic Equipment Will Be Needed?
  •     Can I Use Biodiesel in the New Tier 4 Emissions Engines/Equipment?
  •     What are Other Emissions-Related Issues We’re Likely to Be Hearing About in the Future?

The paper includes emissions tables, technical graphics and other resources. These and other FAQs can be found at:
