Data from Reflects Increased, and More Competitive, Demand For Summer 2011 Internships

As the U.S. economy continues to reflect a challenging job market for the public at large, it’s even worse for younger people. In August 2010, the unemployment rate for 20-24 year olds was 17.9%, nearly double the average of the U.S. for that month (9.5%), according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Because of this, internships are more important than ever as a means to gaining work experience and helping graduates get a job. Consequently, the competition for internships has become fiercer and based on our site statistics, we know that students are looking for summer internships earlier and earlier. In October 2010, saw a significant increase in activity, with students actively searching for summer 2011 internships, as well as for employers posting their open internships for summer 2011.

  •     Of all internship openings posted by employers on our site, the percent of openings for Summer 2011 almost tripled from September to October

Other external data reflects an even earlier demand for summer internships. According to Google Insights, Google search queries for “summer 2010 internships” began in June 2009. In comparison, Google search queries for “summer 2011 internships” began in May 2010 – a full month earlier than the previous year.
