Winter can be a difficult time for vehicle batteries, for ideal performance is usually obtained in working temperatures between 20°C and 30°C. Conditions outside these temperatures will place additional strain on the battery to the detriment of its performance and, if not managed correctly, its lifespan.
CTEK, a leading global brand in the care and maintenance of vehicle batteries, describes the how to best manage the performance of a battery during the onset of colder temperatures as well as when a vehicle is 'put to bed' for the winter.
When the temperature drops below 20°C a battery's output and performance begins to diminish due to a number of factors and, continues to deteriorate as the temperature drops further.
Initially, the electro-chemical reactions within the battery begin to slow due to the thickening of the electrolyte, which as a result, places immense additional strain upon the battery when it produces power. This strain is multiplied even further as colder temperatures also increase the density of the engine oil, making the engine harder to turn over. These factors lead to the battery having to work a lot harder to produce the same outcome - the necessary power to start a vehicle.
As the temperature drops further, a vehicles battery will lose up to 35 per cent of its efficiency when freezing point is reached and more than 50 per cent when exceeded. Colder temperatures also affect the engines need for additional power during starting - the two together massively increasing the likelihood of battery failure.
Without the proper care and management, vehicle batteries quickly weaken during winter, especially when the vehicle is only used for short journeys and as a result, battery failure is the biggest cause of breakdowns within the UK and has been for the past 3 years.
To avoid the cost and inconvenience of battery failure, CTEK recommends that a battery is charged and maintained overnight by a smart battery charger such as the CTEK MXS 4003. The MXS 4003 is a spark proof, reverse polarity protected 12V battery charger and due to its patented charging process, can be left attached safely to battery for an indefinite amount of time. Charging a battery over night not only ensures that the battery is fully charged and conditioned, but also keeps the battery warm so that the chemical reaction needed to start the vehicle in the morning is a lot less demanding.
Jan-Ulf Soderberg, Head of Brand and Marketing at CTEK, commented: "Effective battery protection and management needn't be a time consuming, difficult or even daunting task and with a CTEK charger, it isn't, rather being a case of simple 'plug and play'. CTEK's smart chargers optimise the performance of lead-acid batteries by determining accurate readings of a battery's charge and ensuring the appropriate action is taken to charge, condition and maintain the state of battery, preparing it for use whenever it is required."
