CTEK, a leading global brand in the care and maintenance of vehicle batteries, describes the how to best manage the performance of a battery during the onset of colder temperatures as well as when a vehicle is 'put to bed' for the winter.

When the temperature drops below 20°C a battery's output and performance begins to diminish due to a number of factors and, continues to deteriorate as the temperature drops further.

Initially, the electro-chemical reactions within the battery begin to slow due to the thickening of the electrolyte, which as a result, places immense additional strain upon the battery when it produces power. This strain is multiplied even further as colder temperatures also increase the density of the engine oil, making the engine harder to turn over. These factors lead to the battery having to work a lot harder to produce the same outcome - the necessary power to start a vehicle.

As the temperature drops further, a vehicles battery will lose up to 35 per cent of its efficiency when freezing point is reached and more than 50 per cent when exceeded. Colder temperatures also affect the engines need for additional power during starting - the two together massively increasing the likelihood of battery failure.

Without the proper care and management, vehicle batteries quickly weaken during winter, especially when the vehicle is only used for short journeys and as a result, battery failure is the biggest cause of breakdowns within the UK and has been for the past 3 years.

To avoid the cost and inconvenience of battery failure, CTEK recommends that a battery is charged and maintained overnight by a smart battery charger such as the CTEK MXS 4003.
