About the Avalon: Once known as the Lawrence Hotel, this location became famous to the area when presidential hopeful Massachusetts Senator John F. Kennedy stayed in September of 1960. His purpose to visit this historical downtown location was to perform a speech at the intersections of 10th and Peach where thousands of locals and visitors attended. Eventually the Lawrence Hotel was torn down and the location site was rebuilt as a Hilton.
