Two structures built with innovative CarbonCast® High Performance Insulated Wall Panels by AltusGroup® precaster members were recipients of the prestigious 2010 GreenSite Project of the Year contest. Winners are selected based on ground-breaking techniques, materials or products, cost- or time-saving methods, engineering design, workmanship and creativity.

The $22.1 million, 108,000-square-foot Willow Creek Elementary School in Fleetwood, Pa. by High Concrete Group LLC Denver, Pa., was selected as one of five winners in the Institutional category. Completed in fall 2009, its precast concrete wall system with C-GRID® carbon fiber grid shear connectors is thermally efficient with an assembly R-value of 16, offering continuous insulation and outstanding occupant comfort. It’s also fully structurally composite contributing to more usable space in the building interior. AEM Architects, Inc., Reading, Pa., was the design firm; the general contractor was Wohlsen Construction Company, Lancaster, Pa.

Similarly, the $28 million, 55,000-square-foot Proximity Hotel in Greensboro, N.C., won in the Commercial category. The nation’s first LEED® Platinum hotel, Proximity features panels produced by Metromont Corporation, Greenville S.C. In addition to promoting thermal efficiency, concrete for this insulated precast building envelope was manufactured within 100 miles of the site, utilized 20 percent fly ash and 4-7 percent pre-consumer content. Sustainable advantages like the reduction of harvested materials, site noise and dust augment its 39 percent reduction in energy use versus comparable buildings. The R-14 exterior walls contributed to the energy savings. The design firm was Centrepoint Architecture, Raleigh, N.C. and the general contractor was Weaver Cooke Construction, LLC, Greensboro, N.C.

The 2010 GreenSite Project of the Year contest is sponsored by Concrete Construction and The Concrete Producer magazines. GreenSite features a slideshow with full descriptions and photos of the projects and others at http://www.theconcreteproducer.com.
