MASONRY CONSTRUCTION magazine has selected The Crescent Dorms at Quinnipiac University (Hamden, CT) as its 2010 Project of the Year.

Masonry contractor B.W. Dexter II, Inc., based in Danielson, Conn., completed the 515,000-square-foot, 1200-bed dormitory complex that represents the largest single masonry subcontract ever awarded in Connecticut. Aside from its sheer size, the project’s complex design challenged the masons to implement time- and labor-saving techniques. Dexter’s team designed a reusable rolled concave steel arch template to construct a brick-face concrete retaining wall that runs parallel to the main building for almost a quarter mile. The masons used a thin-brick precast arch system to save time and labor in the building’s main entrance.

“The 2010 Project of the Year showcases the masonry industry’s unique ability to show the material’s beauty while also demonstrating the industry’s practical merits of being a material of choice to the construction industry,” said Tom Bagsarian, editor of MASONRY CONSTRUCTION, the leading magazine for the masonry industry.

MASONRY CONSTRUCTION magazine’s Project of the Year exemplifies mason contractors’ contributions, including helping architects and engineers create the best masonry has to offer, exceptional problem solving and teamwork, painstaking restoration and repair work, and environmentally friendly construction.

The awards include one overall Project of the Year and winners in 11 categories. Winning projects will be featured in the November/December issue of MASONRY CONSTRUCTION. The project teams will be honored in an awards ceremony at the World of Concrete/World of Masonry in Las Vegas, Jan. 18-21, 2011.
