James E. Helmus, CPA, senior managing director of state & local tax services at FTI Schonbraun McCann Group (“SMG”) has been appointed to NAIOP’s Tax and Finance Subcommittee for 2011.

Helmus, CPA, senior managing director of state & local tax services at FTI Schonbraun McCann Group (“SMG”) has been appointed to NAIOP’s Tax and Finance Subcommittee for 2011. Helmus is based in SMG’s New York City office where he is part of the firm’s business tax advisory group and directs its state and local tax practice. A nationally recognized state and local tax specialist for the real estate industry, Helmus brings more than 20 years of experience to the committee.

Over the course of his career, Helmus has consulted on many of the most significant real estate transactions in New York City’s history, including such recognized trophy properties as Rockefeller Center, the Met Life Building, Stuyvesant Town/Peter Cooper Village and the Chrysler Building.

Prior to joining SMG, Helmus served as the national leader for real estate state and local tax services for Ernst & Young. He also spent a number of years in the New York office of the state and local tax practices of both Arthur Andersen and KPMG.

A frequent speaker at national conferences and seminars and source to national media, Helmus earned a B.B.A. in accounting from Adelphi University and is a Certified Public Accountant in New York. He is a member of the NAREIT State and Local Tax Subcommittee, the NAIOP Government Affairs Committee/NYC Chapter, Business Council of New York State Tax Committee, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants.
