After gaining a degree in Mathematics at the University of Bristol, his marketing career began in 1989 with Unilever where he held a number of senior sales and marketing posts. During his time at Unilever he also spent a number of years working in Chile and Turkey.
In 2006 Bate joined Tourism Ireland as Head of Great Britain where he headed the team based in Britain responsible for marketing the island of Ireland as a leisure tourism and business tourism destination.

Lawrence and his family, wife Catherine and children Sebastian (13) and Ewan (10), are no strangers to the outdoor life. They enjoy travelling and outdoor activities and Lawrence is booked onto a Practical Caravanning Course in the next few weeks in order to brush up his manoeuvring skills in readiness to take to the caravanning super highway and take advantage of the Caravan Club’s holiday caravan parks!
Lawrence participates in marathons and ultramarathons; he cycles, plays volleyball and squash and coaches at his local rugby club. He is also a governor at the local primary school
