Kansas City, MO (PRWEB) November 12, 2010
In honor of service members and veterans all across the world, Grantham University staff volunteered their time at the Veterans Stand Down event for homeless veterans held in Kansas City, Kansas on Friday, November 5th. The Stand Down event is modeled after the “Stand Down” used during the Vietnam War where troops were given a break from fighting to get much needed rest, warm meals, showers and relief from battle fatigue.
Hundreds of organizations from the greater Kansas City Metro area joined forces to provide assistance and help break through the barriers that prevent homeless veterans from re-entering society and live more fulfilling lives. Homeless veterans received assistance with medical needs, substance abuse, legal issues, taxes, housing and utility assistance, family counseling, mentorships, and educational and employment opportunities. Food, clothing and toiletries were also provided.
Grantham University volunteers spent the day handing out clothing, escorting the veterans through the various aid stations, and providing hearing and vision screening.
“The Veterans Stand Down event was a very rewarding and eye opening experience,” said Joseph Gartner, marketing coordinator at Grantham University. “Too easily we get wrapped up in our own personal affairs, and this event for homeless veterans truly put things in to perspective for me.”
Stand Down events are organized across the country by the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. NCHV is the resource and technical assistance center for a national network of community-based service providers and local, state and federal agencies that provide support for hundreds of thousands of homeless veterans each year.
