The 2010 incoming Honors class, an academically talented group of students, is joining an elite group of scholars who are motivated and focused on academic achievement
Dobbs Ferry, NY (Vocus) November 10, 2010
The prestigious Mercy College Honors Program has reached its largest enrollment in the program’s 39-year history, more than doubling last year’s incoming Honors class.
“The 2010 incoming Honors class, an academically talented group of students, is joining an elite group of scholars who are motivated and focused on academic achievement,” said Mercy College President Dr. Kimberly R. Cline.
The program, named as a “Smart Choice” by “Peterson’s Honors Programs and Colleges Guide,” and one of the first in New York State, offers unique preparation for talented students through exceptional academic challenges, an enriched learning experience, and engaging co-curricular activities. As part of the Honors Program, students take part in teambuilding exercises, online discussions, and collaborative research projects.
“Encouraging this talented group of students to gain knowledge together and share what they learn across disciplinary boundaries is one of the distinguishing features of this program,” said Dr. Michael Sperling, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs.
According to Dr. Duane Smith, director of honors and scholars programs at the College, “The education and experiences Honors students receive provides a strong foundation for future success and gives graduates the assertive edge needed to succeed in today's highly competitive world.”
Christina Chai, class of 2010 valedictorian and Honors graduate, is well on her way to achieving her dream of becoming a doctor. Thanks to the support she received as an Honors student, she has begun studies this fall at Cornell Medical College.
Honors student Nicole Rivera ’12, a Mercy College junior majoring in psychology and biology, credits the program for shaping her academic path and preparing her for a career in psychology. “The Honors Program is providing me with engaging learning experiences and hands-on opportunities,” she said.
Honors students participate in exclusive seminars with world leaders, academic scholars, and industry executives throughout the school year and are provided with a laptop as part of the program. Additional benefits include scholarship support and placement in highly sought after internship positions.
