“Kayak buyers have always accepted whatever designs manufacturers offered. Now, our customers have the ability to make the kayak a reflection of their own personality.." David AvRutick, Folbot

For nearly 78 years, Folbot (folbot.com) has given customers exactly what they desire in folding kayak performance: durable, lightweight, portable, expedition quality boats that have spirited them into nearly every corner of the globe.
Now, Folbot is the first kayak manufacturer to allow customers to design their own boat decks. “From camo to tie-dye to logos and marriage proposals - we can produce personalized kayaks to look exactly as our customers want,” says David AvRutick, President of the 77-year-old company.
The unique printing process actually infuses the ink into the kayak’s deck fabric. This printing technique was pioneered by Folbot during the creation of the MetroBoat (with the New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority). The MetroBoat infuses the NYC subway map into the Folbot’s deck. “Because the image resides within the fabric, it cannot fade, chip or scrape away,” says AvRutick. Folbot officials are also excited about private-label kayaks for use by corporations, clubs and associations.
AvRutick sees this development as the next stage in kayak evolution. “Kayak buyers have always accepted whatever designs manufacturers offered. Now, our customers have the ability to make the kayak a reflection of their own personality and style or interest. The look of a kayak is now limited only by one’s imagination,” he said.
Production involves a process where customers provide an image of at least 72 dpi. Folbot customer service reps work directly with the customer to create the final look of their deck. Once the customer approves a mock up, the kayak is produced. http://www.folbot.com/kayaks/customkayaks/
The custom deck is currently available on the company’s popular $1295.00 Citibot model, and will be rolled out to include the whole Folbot fleet. Weighing in at 24 pounds and measuring 10 feet when assembled, the Citibot can carry up to 210 pounds. The boat fits completely into Folbot’s 36-inch backpack, making it easy to carry on planes, trains and in automobiles. Custom printing orders received by November 30 will be available for holiday delivery. Customized patterns begin at $150 per boat for an order of 1 to 9.
