Turnstone Environmental Technologies congratulates its licensor partner ClimateWell on winning GE's Ecomagination Challenge. ClimateWell's SolarChiller converts heat from the sun into cooling for data centers, factories, hospitals, commercial buildings and homes. The SolarChiller captures and stores energy, releases it when needed, and provides cooling even after the sun has set. Turnstone Environmental Technologies is a ClimateWell distribution partner and licensee, and has exclusive rights to manufacture and distribute ClimateWell systems in India and selectively in the United States.

ClimateWell's SolarChillers are used in over 200 installations throughout Europe and the Middle East. SolarChillers can be used in rural and “off-grid” applications, with minimum electricity to monitor and program the systems.

ClimateWell's SolarChiller is one of twelve concepts chosen in today's awards for the Ecomagination Challenge, a $200 million innovation experiment to build next-generation clean energy technologies. To identify and recognize the most promising technologies and businesses, GE teamed with venture capital firms Emerald Technology Ventures, Foundation Capital, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and Rockport Capital.

"We congratulate Per Olofsson and his team for their innovations and commitment to energy efficient cooling and environmental stewardship. Our goal at Turnstone is to help ClimateWell bring SolarChillers to new markets, especially India, where energy efficiency is crucial to economic growth. We look forward to working with building owners, developers and solar installers to lower power consumption and CO2 emissions," said Marc La Magna, Chairman of Turnstone Environmental Technologies.

Per Olofsson, Group CEO of ClimateWell AB added “Heating and air conditioning consumes about 40% of the energy used in buildings in the United States and India. The SolarChiller saves money and reduces CO2 emissions, while keeping occupants comfortable as always. We greatly appreciate GE’s recognition of ClimateWell through this award, and look forward to building on our partnership with Turnstone to promote our technology.”

Turnstone Environmental Technologies also announced forthcoming installations of ClimateWell SolarChillers for The Energy Resources Institute (TERI) and other commercial partners in India.

About ClimateWell SolarChillers

SolarChillers can be used for industrial, commercial and residential use. No other technology on the market provides solar-powered or waste-heat powered cooling and hot water with embedded energy storage. SolarChillers can be supplied in two sizes, the CW10, which produces 2 tons of refrigeration (TR) cooling power, and the CW 20 which provides 3 TR. Several units are bundled to meet energy requirements of 10 to 50 TR or more. SolarChillers can be retrofitted into existing HVAC systems, substituting electric- or diesel- powered cooling systems with renewable energy based cooling systems, and reducing demand from the electric grid. (Note: 1 TR is the removal of heat required over 24 hours to freeze one metric ton of water, approximately 12,000 BTU).

ClimateWell’s proprietary, patented “Triple-State” absorption technology is the heart of SolarChiller’s unique ability to store thermal energy with virtually no thermal loss. This technology enables SolarChillers to charge when energy is available, and deliver steady cooling and heating energy from fluctuating sources of heat such as solar collectors, biomass or waste heat from diesel generators, industrial processes or cogeneration installations.
