“Outside a small village, edged with Oak trees, grew a glorious garden owned by the McGee’s” so begins the journey of Whitman, a blade of grass looking for admiration and respect from the flowers as well as Mrs. McGee – the garden owner. Lan Nguyen’s first children’s book, Mrs. McGee’s Garden, a new book by the Monkey Kidz Publishing an imprint of the Actuation Press (Nov 12, 2010), takes the reader on an organic journey of learning self respect and just being yourself.
Whitman’s actions demonstrate how we sometimes try to be something that we’re not, and how that can lead to trouble. Lan Nguyen’s creative story telling combined with colorful and expressive artwork, allows the reader to focus on the important message the book is telling while being entertained at the same time. Mrs. McGee reminds us that it’s our differences that make us beautiful and that in the end, self acceptance is more important than fitting in.
This book is an excellent story for parents to read with their kids, and for early readers to master on their own. Parents will enjoy watching their kids relate to the characters in real life- the next time they’re out playing on the grass.
