In a recent press release Dr. Mark Jones spoke about different methods of ear reconstruction available to microtia patients today. In October, Dr. Jones spoke on the topic at The 21st Annual Cleft Lip and Palate Symposium sponsored by Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
In the release Dr. Jones discussed the different methods available including sculpted rib grafts, artificial implants, plastic glue-ons and snap-on ears. Dr. Jones further discussed the advantages of sculpted rib grafts over the other methods.
"I'm often asked about synthetic ears and why I believe my method is a superior approach. There are several reasons. First, because our bodies are designed to reject any foreign objects, the complication rate is much higher with synthetic ears. Also, a synthetic implant is physically inconvenient and cumbersome and has the potential to be exposed to further trauma. Finally, notable otologists will not operate for the hearing part on a synthetic ear implant because of added complications," stated Dr. Jones in the press release.
The sculpted rib graft technique has stood the test of time and has been evolving and improving due to the efforts of surgeons like Dr. Mark Jones. Dr. Jones superior training and international experience has allowed him to develop improvement to the best reconstruction standards.
Dr. Jones has had extensive international experience and education including degrees from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, two additional degrees from Oxford University in England and a Fulbright Fellowship in Paris, France. This is in addition to his undergraduate degree from Emory University and medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia and residencies at both Johns Hopkins University and Stamford University.
Dr. Jones's holds the unique combination of dual board certification from The American Board of Plastic Surgery and The American Board of Otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat; ENT). His extensive education, credentials and over 20 years of experience give him a unique skill set to enhancing both the aesthetic features and the natural functionality of the body.
