Renovation of Cherry Creek Medical Building Awarded in “Buildings that Beckon” Category

Sexton Lawton Architecture, a Denver-based full service architecture and design firm, today announced the firm has won the 2010 Mayor’s Design Award for its renovation of the Cherry Creek Medical Building located at 255 Detroit Street in Denver. The award category, “Buildings that Beckon,” identifies projects that exhibit extraordinary curb appeal, engage the street in a distinct manner and promote pedestrian activity.

Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper — also Colorado governor-elect — began the Mayor’s Design Awards six years ago to encourage well-designed small projects in the city. The award honors those individuals who make design excellence a priority, paying tribute to them for making the city provocative and memorable. General selection criteria include sustainability, inspiring design, extraordinary use of the ordinary, design as branding, honoring of the public realm and creativity.

“Great cities are just as enriched by many small and beautiful design interventions as they are by large and bold civic gestures,” said Hickenlooper in a statement.

“No matter how large or small the project, design matters,” said Denver Planning Manager Peter J. Park, AICP. “We all benefit when owners go the extra mile to invest time, money and creativity into their property, creating a culture of quality design and encouraging others to follow suit. These honorees are diverse examples of how attention to design details makes Denver a special place to live, work and play.”

The project involved the renovation of a 2-1/2 story brick office building built in the 1980s in the Cherry Creek North shopping district. The renovation converted the structure into a transparent, contemporary beacon that engages pedestrians and echoes the clinical nature of the medical tenants within. Features include a custom “glass fin” window system in both transparent and translucent finishes and a new full-height glass tower that serves as the main entrance to the penthouse during the day and a glowing lantern at night.
