On November 19, at the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Annual Convention, the education services and technology company Pearson will debut realidades.com, a 100 percent digital middle and high school Spanish program.

Realidades is just one of Pearson's many programs that supports ACFTL's goal of preparing U.S. students for living, working, and learning in a global environment.

ACTFL participants can visit Pearson's booth 1606 on the show floor to experience realidades.com, as well as the company's other foreign language programs.

Today, Spanish is the primary language spoken at home by more than 35 million people living in the United States and is the country's second most-common language. By 2025, America is likely to see a 45 percent increase in Spanish-speaking Hispanics, according to a study by Roslow Research Group. As Spanish grows in importance and relevance to America's students, Pearson's Realidades utilizes technology to develop students' necessary communicative proficiency and cultural understanding of the language.

Built on Pearson's personalized learning management system SuccessNet Plus, realidades.com includes a full electronic text for students along with a wide variety of interactive content such as workbooks, hip hop songs, videos, audio, flashcards, games, and assessments. The online platform allows students to record activities through the RealTalk! tool, which helps them practice speaking skills and build an oral portfolio that can be downloaded and stored. Teachers can then access the recordings, providing an easy way for educators to listen and evaluate each student's spoken work individually.

realidades.com provides teachers a fully online classroom management tool, helping them organize their classes, enroll students, and set up a customized gradebook. Spanish teachers can assign tasks from pre-populated Realidades lesson plans, customize activities, differentiate assignments for learners of all levels, and add their own activities and assessments. With these online resources, teachers save time on administrative, planning, and grading tasks and spend more time where it matters most--educating students.

"Learning a second language has never been more critical, as we seek to ensure our students are career- and college-ready global citizens. Realidades aids our leaders of tomorrow in understanding Spanish as a communications and cultural tool through an array of next-generation digital resources and activities. The program's digital course presents a fresh, exciting approach to Spanish by making language learning real and accessible for our digitally focus and digitally savvy students," said Pearson's Director for World Languages Cathy Wilson.

At ACTFL, Pearson also is launching two new high school French programs tied to the updated AP® French Language and Culture Examination being administered in May 2012: Allons au-delà: La langue et les cultures du monde francophone, a new literature anthology, and AP* French: Preparing for the Language and Culture Examination, a complete test preparation book. Both titles will be available in print and on the SuccessNet Plus learning management system in March 2011. For more information, visit http://www.PearsonSchool.com/APFrench2012.

Pearson will also provide updates from the 2010 ACTFL conference via @WLPearson on Twitter.
