WOMMA and CCC Form Alliance to Launch New WOM-COMM Certificate Program for Healthcare/Pharma

Proprietary method helps to prevent violations and protect companies

The Word of Mouth Marketing Association (WOMMA) and the Center for Communication Compliance (CCC) have formed a strategic alliance to bring the healthcare industry a new WOM-COMM Certificate Program focused on regulatory compliance for new and emerging media.

The certification program, entitled Regulatory Compliance 101: Internet Promotion & Social Media, is the first-of-its-kind online certificate program based on a “train + test” methodology designed to help reduce violative materials, decrease legal vulnerability, and support a culture of compliance.

The program is a two-hour online course directed to any professional in the pharmaceutical, biotech, healthcare, or device industry who works with, designs, executes, reviews, or oversees internet promotion and social media programs. This includes practitioners of WOM working with clients in healthcare and pharmaceuticals and the brand marketers managing their programs. In order to confirm participants’ comprehension of program content, there is a corresponding test.

Topics covered in Regulatory Compliance 101: Internet Promotion & Social Media include websites, banner ads, search engine ads and optimization, sharing features, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, chat rooms, direct mobile communications (texting, etc.), and SideWiki. It also includes FDA and DDMAC warning letters and answers to specific questions posed by the industry and their agencies.

The federal government has made it clear: off-label promotion of prescription pharmaceuticals and medical devices is subject not just to warning letters, but to criminal prosecution and significant fines for both the company and individual employees (including marketing managers, sales directors, and others). The government can also bar a company from selling products through government-sponsored programs (e.g., Medicare/Medicaid).

“The current regulatory environment makes the development of online social media programs for pharmaceuticals and medical devices extremely challenging,” says Ilyssa Levins, President of CCC. “By launching a program to confirm mastery over fundamental regulatory information, the alliance strives to prevent violations and protect companies by supporting a culture of compliance.”

CCC and WOMMA have identified a group of experts with particular expertise in social media who will instruct the course and oversee the content for currency. These include four former FDA officials, Juris Doctors (JDs) and FTC veterans.
