Carpets and Fine Furniture Take a Beating in Winter, but Expert Deep Cleaning Minimizes the Toll

High traffic and abrasive soil can ruin expensive home amenities and even void manufacturer warranties. Veteran Denver carpet specialist Phil Dreessen recommends pre-holiday extra care to extend the life of these assets.

The long winter season of indoor living and the usual house-full of family and friends over the holidays take a toll on a home’s carpeting and upholstery, and Denver-area carpet and home cleaning expert Phil Dreessen says the life and value of these expensive amenities can be extended for years to come with proper care.

“Our carpets and furniture take a beating over the holidays and the winter what with all the use, and normal vacuuming isn’t enough to protect these assets,” says Dreessen, owner of A Personal Touch, a cleaning service serving the metro Denver area and specializing in carpets, upholstery, floor tile grout and air ducts. “In fact, many of the carpet and fine furniture manufacturers have warranties that can be voided without periodic deep cleaning and restoration. With proper care, they will last beautifully for decades; with neglect the wear and tear will show in a relatively short time.”

The problem is, of course, gritty dirt that settles deep into the piles of carpets and upholstery and then gets ground in with foot traffic and general use, he adds. The grit acts as an abrasive, rubbing raw the fibers in the carpets, rugs and furniture, and at best vacuuming is only meant as a maintenance step between a regular schedule of deeper cleaning. Dreessen recommends steam cleaning with a professional-grade machine designed to cleanse the fibers and extract the dirt that settles deep into the weave.

“Anyone who has ever rented one of those steam carpet cleaners knows how much dirt and soil is extracted, even on carpets and sofas regularly vacuumed,” he says. “But in the hands of a professional, more than twice the amount of dirt is extracted, leaving the carpets and furniture fresh and free of abrasive grit and, more importantly, leaving the warranty intact.”

Moreover, Dreessen adds, the do-it-yourself carpet and upholstery machines, while better than not deep cleaning at all, are not very good at removing pet odors and stains, while certified professionals like those at A Personal Touch specialize is these extra-care steps.

To remove pet odors from carpets, stains must be removed or neutralized from the layers affected, including, in severe cases, the underside of the carpet, the carpet padding or the sub-floor. Left untreated, pet odor can become absorbed into the home.

For standard carpet cleaning, A Personal Touch uses a powerful Deep Soil Carpet Cleaning system that is truck-mounted to remove tough stains and odors, including gum, tar, rust and pet stains and odors. After cleaning, carpets are groomed for a “new look” and protected with a Dupont Teflon carpet protector.

In addition A Personal Touch offers expert service in carpet restoration, including seam repairs, carpet re-stretching, burn repair and application of transitional strips. The company also provides carpet dying expertise, fire and smoke damage restoration and drying and de-humidification.

For furniture, the company cleans durable or delicate fabrics, including whites and deep-colored fabrics. Depending on the fabric, furniture will be dry or steam cleaned, per manufacturer's recommendations. Furniture elements, such as pillows, are cleaned individually, and, after cleaning, all furniture is treated with fiber-coat soil protectors to ensure lasting beauty.

Beyond carpets and furniture, A Personal Touch technicians are also experts in getting stained grout surfaces looking beautifully clean beginning with the application of a commercial tile and grout cleaner. Grout lines are scrubbed clean and the soiled dirt extracted using a vacuum system. A seal is then applied to the grout lines, retaining the original color and preventing future spills from penetrating the grout. A Personal Touch can also restore granite and marble tile on countertops or floors.

Also, the company specializes in air duct cleaning, removing the particles of dust, hair, mildew and soot that collect there. A Personal Touch cleans furnace and dryer vents as well as electrostatic air filters. Clean air ducts reduce the possibility of fire, lower energy costs and allow occupants to breathe cleaner air.

A Personal Touch owner Dreessen is an IICRC Certified Technician, the leading third-party certification program in the carpet and upholstery trade, and personally trains all of his technicians to IICRC and his own exacting standards. In addition, all the staff, including Dreessen, takes continuing education classes and seminars in cleaning techniques throughout the year.

Founded in 1978 after Dreessen had spent several years becoming certified and plying the carpet cleaning business with other companies, A Personal Touch took its name from his own customers who said they liked “his personal touch” with their homes.
