The annual award is given to an individual who has demonstrated significant courage, compassion, forgiveness, and/or self-sacrifice in the face of challenging circumstances. Beliefnet will be accepting nominations through November 28, 2010. The selections of the top nominees will be announced on December 27, 2010 and voting will then be open to the public for the period between December 27, 2010 and January 17, 2011. The winner will be announced on January 24, 2011.
Beliefnet's annual Most Inspiring Person of the Year Award draws nominees from all walks of life. They have included celebrities, athletes, political and religious leaders, humanitarians and ordinary people doing extraordinary things. In 2009, the winner was Zach Bonner, a young boy who was nominated for "living his conviction that no one is ever too young to change the world." Zach was selected for his compassionate, selfless service to homeless children and for giving a voice to their plight. Zach won the award against a field of other inspiring individuals which included: Captain "Sully" Sullenberger, the Hero of the Hudson; Danny Cotrell, the Recession Angel; Kaleb Eulls, a football star who helped save lives; Jorge Munoz, for feeding the hungry; Paul Levy, a CEO who saved jobs; Jill and Kevin, newlyweds whose wedding generated donations; Griffeth and Illingworth, two "do-gooder" officers; Iranian protesters for standing up for freedom; and Michael J. Fox for being a devoted optimist.
