Manhattan, KS (Vocus) November 23, 2010
GTM Sportswear® and the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) are pleased to announce Abbey Leonardi as the GTM Sportswear® Athlete of the Month for September 2010. Leonardi will be recognized at a press conference at Kennebunk High School, Kennebunk, Maine on November 23, 2010 at 9:15 am EST. She will receive an award, GTM® merchandise and be featured in various GTM Sportswear® marketing materials.
Featured in the October issue of Running Times Magazine, the 5-foot-1 Leonardi broke the meet record October 2, 2010 at the Maine Cross Country Festival of Champions at Belfast by 27 seconds. Her time of 17:58.35 gave her a 23-second victory over one of the stronger fields in state history. She became only the second girl to break the 18-minute barrier on the course. The two-time defending Class A state champion and the New England champion in 2008, Leonardi also set state records in the 1,600 (4:51) and the 3,200 (10:42) last spring, then clocked a time of 10:26 to take the New England title in the 3,200.
“The National High School Coaches Association is proud to recognize Abbey for her outstanding performances, not only on the field, but in the school and community as well,” said Bobby Ferraro, Jr., Executive Director of the National High School Coaches Association. “It’s truly an honor to recognize someone of this stature.”
"GTM Sportswear® is honored to be partnering with the NHSCA in recognizing outstanding student athletes such as Abbey. She has really shown her commitment and dedication to her sport and is a great example for the youth in our communities," said Nikki Miller, Vice President of Marketing for GTM Sportswear®. "We are very proud of Abbey and her outstanding achievements."
The NHSCA and GTM Sportswear® will honor one deserving high school athlete each month through April 2011. NHSCA Coaches can nominate commendable athletes through the NHSCA website. Each month six finalists will be selected by the NHSCA and presented via ballot to a group of high school sports writers, high school coaches, NHSCA and GTM® representatives to choose the winner. Out of the eight recipients of the monthly award, one athlete will be chosen as the GTM Sportswear® Athlete of the Year in May 2011.
