Appoints Mark Voigtsberger, Seasoned Power Quality Testing Executive, to Head New Unit

Southern Cross Corp announced today a new business line focused on Power Field Services to address stray voltage and associated hazards. A leader in pipeline safety, field services and compliance reporting, Southern Cross has been well known within utility circles for more than six decades. Mark Voigtsberger, a seasoned power quality testing executive with more than two decades of experience, has been named chief of the new unit at Southern Cross.

For safety reasons, many electric utilities are taking proactive steps to survey voltage potential on electrical distribution system components and other utility infrastructure. According to some reports, one in 337 light poles requires some form of remediation. Often utilities retain outside resources to conduct the surveys and coordinate these remediation efforts. Because of its deep experience and long-standing relationships with hundreds of utilities, Southern Cross is fully prepared to tackle this growing market.

“Most stray voltage accidents may have been avoided had the grounding conductors and bonding systems been properly maintained and inspected,” said Sean Durkin, president of Southern Cross. “Recognizing the need for qualified, experienced stray voltage professionals to conduct field audits for utilities, Southern Cross is strategically expanding our offerings to incorporate this new initiative within our services portfolio. We’re delighted that Mark Voigtsberger has agreed to lead this new unit at Southern Cross, and we welcome him on board.”

“Even the best maintained electrical distribution systems are susceptible to hazardous voltage conditions due to third-party damage, motor vehicle accidents, construction mishaps, utility service theft, damaged junction boxes and vandalism,” said Mark Voigtsberger, director of the Power Field Services unit at Southern Cross. “It’s therefore critical for utilities to regularly survey and immediately address problem areas. With more than six decades of experience working with public utilities, there’s no company better positioned to tackle this growing concern than Southern Cross.”

Effective immediately, Southern Cross will begin calling on utilities, municipalities, transportation departments and military installations responsible for infrastructure maintenance. Stray voltage surveys involve visual and physical examination and testing of all utility sources using state-of-the-art test equipment. Full sweeps include traffic signals, light poles, junction boxes, fire hydrant and call boxes, pay phones, manhole covers as well as water and gas system fixtures. If voltage is detected, technicians validate the findings and immediately secure the area for remediation.
