Giving a gift handcrafted in Cape Breton by local artisans brings with it a sense of something substantial and durable, says Lori Burke, Marketing Manager.

Experience the thrill of finding one-of-a-kind handmade gifts this holiday season in Cape Breton’s exclusive craft market, The Christmas Loft, at the Cape Breton Centre for Arts and Design in Sydney, Cape Breton. 17 professional juried artisans are featured in the 3rd floor loft whose works are the essence of quality, individuality and tradition. “Giving a gift handcrafted in Cape Breton by local artisans brings with it a sense of something substantial and durable, says Lori Burke, Marketing Manager. “ It gives support to Cape Breton artisans, it strengthens our Island economy and supports the culture and heritage we are so proud of.”

In addition to the Christmas Loft exhibitors, the Gallery which is open year round showcases 75 Cape Breton Island artisans featuring traditional items reflective of the Island’s Gaelic culture such as hooked rugs from Cheticamp to handmade quilts as well as more contemporary gifts including photography, art and jewelry. On Thursday November 25 from 5pm to 9pm, the Cape Breton Centre for Arts and Design hosts Holiday Spirit 2010, an evening of fine craft, music and martinis. This private shopping party provides guests the opportunity to purchase one-of-a-kind handmade crafts from some of Cape Breton’s finest artisans, enjoy ECMA award winners Dawn and Margie Beaton and share a martini and canapés in the spirit of the holiday season.

“Many of us know our local artisans who through their work preserve our Cape Breton culture,” states Lori Burke. “We create personal connections with them when we meet them at craft shows, farmer's markets, and local coffee shops. They are our neighbors and often our friends.” Locals pride themselves in being able to say I buy her work every year, I went to school with him and Mum and I make a special trip to their studio every year. “Buying from our neighbors and friends for our neighbors and friends is simply a feel good transaction,” notes Burke.

The Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design’s Gallery is open Monday – Friday 10 am to 4 pm and 12 Noon to 4 pm on Saturdays. In addition to special events such as The Christmas Loft Craft Market and the Holiday Spirit 2010 private shopping party, the Centre serves the craft community of Cape Breton Island from beginners and recreational practitioners to highly accomplished professionals, offering instruction as well as resource and support services.
