Unfortunately, the tide of foreclosures in Springfield and other parts of Western Massachusetts is still rising

Over the last two months, the Springfield area has recorded the highest foreclosure rate in Massachusetts, but that wasn’t news to the financial professionals at Cambridge Credit Counseling, a non-profit credit and housing counseling agency located in Agawam. They’ve been hearing first-hand from troubled homeowners since Cambridge began its housing counseling division two years ago. The company received its formal approval last year from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and is hosting an open house on December 1st for local mortgage lenders, civic leaders and housing agency officials to let them know more about the full range of services Cambridge has to offer.

“Unfortunately, the tide of foreclosures in Springfield and other parts of Western Massachusetts is still rising,” noted Christopher Viale, Cambridge Credit Counseling’s president and CEO. “Every local agency, from HAP to Springfield Partners for Community Action, has been inundated with requests for help. As a charitable organization, Cambridge is proud to join that initiative and do our part to help restore the stability of our local housing market. With that in mind, we’ve dedicated a great deal of our own budget over the last three years to secure additional training for our staff. Our Open House is an opportunity to showcase the results of that effort for people who are in a position to connect struggling homeowners with an agency ready and able to help.”

Every member of Cambridge’s Housing Division has completed extensive specialized training offered by NeighborWorks, a HUD-approved education provider focused on housing issues. Beyond that, Cambridge is also working directly with The Corwyn Group, a respected Massachusetts housing consulting firm, to ensure the quality of the agency’s growing menu of counseling options. Cambridge’s services currently include pre- and post-purchase counseling, financial management and budget counseling, rental counseling, and foreclosure intervention and default counseling. The agency is also one of a select group of agencies approved by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs to provide reverse mortgage counseling.

Cambridge’s Open House, supported in part by MassHousing, will be held Wednesday, December 1, 2010, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Cambridge’s offices, which are located at 67 Hunt Street in Agawam.
