Program Will Produce Ultra-Clean Burning Firelogs While Saving 200,000+ Trees, Diverting 16+ Million Pounds of Landfill Waste, and Reducing Carbon Footprint

In the wake of President Obama’s America Recycles Day proclamation, CleanFlame announced today the formal launch of its CleanCycle™ Partner Program. SUPERVALU, whose subsidiary chains include Albertsons, Farm Fresh, Jewel-Osco, Lucky, and Shoppers’, is a flagship participant in the program. This innovative program enables grocers to strengthen their commitment to green products and environmental stewardship by:

  •     Significantly reducing waste from landfills—CleanFlame’s patented CleanCycle™ Production Process recycles retailer and supplier Waxed Old Corrugated Cardboard (WOCC) and converts it into environmentally friendly, ultra-clean burning firelogs and firestarters.
  •     Reducing their carbon footprint—SUPERVALU and other CleanCycle™ Partners will supply 16+ million pounds of WOCC to CleanFlame annually for use as raw material in the production of firelogs and firestarters. Diverting waste of that volume will save 200,000+ trees. End users of CleanFlame products will also produce 80 percent less carbon monoxide, 86% less Creosote and 30 percent less particulate matter than cordwood.
  •     Providing “green” products to customers—SUPERVALU and other members of the CleanCycle™ Partners Program will not only supply WOCC as raw material for the production of CleanFlame firelogs and firestarters, but will also stock CleanFlame’s products on store shelves. This will enable their customers to meet their personal environmental goals.

“SUPERVALU is a major grocery retailer and supplier and a world leader in the area of environmental sustainability. We are pleased to work with them to clean the air, save our forests and reduce landfill waste,” said Kory Hamman, CEO of CleanFlame. “Together we are waging a campaign to transform an intractable landfill problem into environmentally beneficial products. At the same time, we’ll enable consumers to enjoy cozy firelit evenings and outdoor cooking fun while shrinking their carbon footprint and breathing cleaner air.”

Two Albertsons stores in Santa Barbara, CA, have been recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency for diverting more than 90% of their waste from landfills. “Albertsons, and SUPERVALU as a whole, is committed to leading the way on environmental sustainability and diverting all possible waste from our Santa Barbara stores is a major accomplishment in this effort,” said Rick Crandall, Director of Sustainability at Albertsons. “In addition to keeping waste out of our landfills, we are charting a course for the future of our stores—one that will not only help our environment and the communities we serve, but also the overall success of our business.”

Wax-coated corrugated cardboard boxes are the water-resistant packaging commonly used to transport produce. Unlike other corrugated cardboard, WOCC cannot be recycled by standard means and requires 50+ years to fully decompose in landfills. Industry estimates indicate that 1.5 million waxed cardboard containers are taken to landfills daily, or 600,000 tons each year.

CleanFlame’s CleanCycle™ Production Process diverts this material from landfills, recycling the used waxed containers into fireplace logs and firestarters which offer superior environmental characteristics versus other fireplace fuel alternatives. This process offers enormous benefit for the environment and allows grocery chains and consumers to achieve their environmental goals.

CleanFlame is a leading manufacturer of ultra-clean burning firelogs and firestarters made from 100% recycled materials. CleanFlame’s patented production process converts used waxed old corrugated containers (WOCC) into clean-burning firelogs and firestarters that are safe enough to cook over. Clean Flame’s clean-burning products, used in fireplaces, home heating and indoor/outdoor cooking environments, reduce landfill waste, create zero impact on non-renewable or rainforest resources, and produce 80% less carbon monoxide, 86% less creosote, 30% less particulate matter and 50% more heat/lb than wood. CleanFlame products can be found in over 5000 retail locations nationwide. Established in 2003, CleanFlame is headquartered in Oroville, California. For more information visit
