1 in 5 American Adults Plan to Own/Purchase a Tablet by 2014, According to New Survey by Fuze Box

Half plan to use tablets for social networking with over one-third (37%) planning to use it for business.

More than 1 in 5 Americans currently own/plan to own a tablet computer within the next three years, according to a new online survey conducted in November by Harris Interactive and sponsored by Fuze Box, with an estimated 9 million currently owning tablet devices. This new research shows a major growth opportunity for tablet-related applications and usage for personal and business reasons.

Tablet Use
Those adults who own and/or plan to buy a tablet computer in the next three years plan to use their tablet for the following:

-Browsing the Internet (78%)
-Email (75%)
-Reading e-books/newspapers (53%)
-Social networking (50%)
-Watching TV/movies (43%)
-Business/Professional purposes (37%)
-Gaming (33%)
-Building a creative portfolio (12%)
-Other (10%)

Tablet in the Workplace
Those adults who use/plan to use their tablet computer for business/professional purposes use/plan to use their tablet computer for:

-Business correspondence (58%)
-Online meetings/Web conferences (37%)
-Marketing (34%)
-Training (33%)
-Finance/accounting (32%)
-Sales (27%)
-Graphic design (27%)
-Inventory management (27%)
-Customer support (24%)
-Other (30%)

“Since before the iPad launched in April, we’ve persisted that tablets would soon become a widely used business tool,” says Jeff Cavins, CEO of Fuze Box. “With 2 in 5 tablet owners using their device for business by 2014, we have officially entered the post PC era and the potential is there to reinvent the business environment for collaboration with portable and tactile computing devices, complete with cameras, document sharing, cloud computing, and storage.”

Tablet Splits on Gender
Based on the results of the survey, it appears that men generally are more receptive of tablet computers. Men are more likely than women to say they own and/or plan to buy a tablet computer in the next three years (26% vs. 18% respectively). Of those who own and/or plan to buy a tablet computer in the next three years, women are more likely than men to say they will use their tablet for social networking (60% vs. 43% respectively).

Youth & Tablets
Younger adults (18-34) are more likely than their older counterparts (55+) to say they own and/or plan to buy a tablet computer in the next three years (26% vs. 15% respectively).

Of those who own and/or plan to buy a tablet computer in the next three years:

-Younger adults (18-34) are more likely than older adults (55+) to say a main use for their tablet computer is social networking (59% vs. 30% respectively).
-Younger adults (18-34) are more likely than older adults (55+) to say they use/plan to use their tablet computer for gaming (39% vs. 21% respectively).

Survey Methodology
This survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive on behalf of Fuze Box, from November 10 to 12, 2010 among 2,288 adults ages 18 and older. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no estimate of theoretical sampling error can be calculated.
