With the average cost of orthodontic treatment at $5,000, many parents find themselves postponing or giving up on providing braces for their children. This year, parents have a new resource to make orthodontic treatment more affordable, thanks to Smiles Change Lives.

Smiles Change Lives (SCL) is an affordable orthodontic program now serving Coffey, Lyon and Osage counties in Kansas, in partnership with the Walter S. and Evan C. Jones Foundation. The Jones Foundation has provided financial support to children in these counties who need, but cannot afford, braces. SCL is now the administrative agent for the Jones Foundation and is encouraging families to begin applying to the program for assistance in obtaining orthodontic treatment.

Smiles Change Lives and the Jones Foundation serve:

  •     Kids ages 11-18 who reside in Coffey, Lyon or Osage counties in Kansas.
  •     Children with crooked teeth and/or misaligned jaws, not already wearing braces.
  •     Children whose documented family income is at or below 200% of Federal Poverty Guidelines – see details here.
  •     Families willing to pay a $25 nonrefundable application fee and if approved, a $500 program fee.
  •     Motivated youth with documented good oral hygiene.

Parents, teachers, nurses and oral health professionals may download an application here or can call 816-421-4949 to obtain an application and other program materials via mail.
Smiles Change Lives (SCL) is a national nonprofit organization that connects children in need with caring orthodontists.

Many of the organization’s 370 orthodontic providers have immediate openings for approved SCL patients.

To help reward those who refer children and families to the program, SCL has created a contest that runs through Friday, January 14th, 2011. Details about the contest can be found here. Prizes range from $100 to $500 for the person or organization that refers the most applicants to SCL.
