The United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has launched HealthCare.gov using the Percussion CM System. The new federal website, a central element of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, helps the public learn about and compare options for health care insurance. Healthcare.gov is the first website combining public and private health insurance plans from every state in the country.

Recently, Percussion announced an enterprise-wide agreement making its web content management products available to every organization within HHS. Healthcare.gov benefits directly from that agreement.

“HHS has created a website that allows the public to take health care into its own hands, putting together information in one easy to use site,” said Percussion Chief Technical Officer Vern Imrich. “Citizens can visit Healthcare.gov to understand the new law, compare health care quality, find insurance options, and learn how to stay healthy.”

“Healthcare.gov doesn’t look anything like a typical government website. In fact, that was the best compliment we got,” said Todd Park, Chief Technical Officer at the Department of Health and Human Services. “We’re very excited about the path ahead.”

Healthcare.gov currently features a number of tools and applications that help consumers easily find information on health insurance options and understand the new law:

  •     A central application that asks visitors a series of simple questions to present options for health insurance they should consider for their specific needs.
  •     A dropdown providing quick access to information for every need: families with children, individuals, seniors, young adults, people with disabilities, and employers.
  •     Lists featuring top questions, updates, informational videos, and other multimedia.
  •     Other custom applications, including the MyHealthFinder widget, which asks questions to suggest tips and tools for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Users of the website benefit from the tremendous amount of data that has been aggregated into a central location from countless databases and across the web. Information is included on the website from over 1,000 private insurance carriers, 5,561 open health insurance market products, every Medicaid and children’s health insurance program in the country, as well as comprehensive information on the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan now available in every U.S. state.

Additionally, much of Healthcare.gov features cross-site linking to other HHS sites and agencies. The Hospital Compare section, for instance, links to an application created by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Department of Health and Human Services, and members of the Hospital Quality Alliance.

Critical to the success and constant improvement of the website is an adherence to the participatory spirit of the Obama Administration’s Open Government Initiative. The site uses Percussion’s Community Marketing Solution to source and reuse user-generated feedback. Anywhere visitors see a Comment Symbol, they can submit their feedback and ideas for improvement, as well as vote on the most helpful pages and forward content to their friends via share buttons.

HHS hosted a live webcast of the press conference announcing the launch of the new website. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sibelius commented at the event: “Healthcare.gov is live, it’s up and running, and it’s going to be enormously helpful to lots of folks who have been trying to navigate what often is a very baffling marketplace and this is an additional tool to put some health choices back in the hands of American consumers.”
