Visian ICL manufactured by STAAR is a good solution for individuals who have moderate to severe nearsightedness or thin corneas. Prior to the ability of this treatment many patients had little alternative but to correct their vision with contact lenses or glasses. For patients who struggle with up to -15D myopia, the Staar Visian ICL offers a new way for patients who struggle with the nuisance of contact lenses and clumsy glasses to attain excellent vision.
The procedure is fairly painless and causes little postoperative discomfort. Like the Verisyse™ lens, the Staar Visian ICL™ is a phakic intraocular lens that sits on the natural crystalline lens in each of your eyes. Also the Staar Visian ICL™ is made of collamer with has an excellent safety profile unlike other phakic IOLs. Collamer is a proprietary, highly biocompatible material derived from pure collagen and a hydrophilic copolymer with a UV absorbing chromophore. In addition for more than 15 years the Staar Vision ICL has been used in thousands of procedures throughout Europe and the United States.
For patients aged 21 to 45 who are nearsighted or who have thin corneas the Staar Visian ICL procedure is an excellent choice. If a patient has been denied LASIK surgery because of chronically dry eyes or oversize pupils, the Staar Visian ICL™ may be able to provide the vision most desired. Patients who have had previous eye surgery, including LASIK, may be unable to have the Staar Visian ICL™ procedure. Likewise, those who have had an ophthalmic disease such as glaucoma may not be able to have Staar Visian ICL™.
One of the most frequent concerns that people have about corrective laser eye surgery is that the procedure permanently changes the eye, and what will happen if a complication arises. One of the important advantages of the Visian ICL is that while it can permanently correct your vision, in the unlikely event that an ICL patient experiences negative side effects after surgery, the lens can be removed and/or replaced if necessary. Also, concerns involving the cornea typically do not apply to the Visian ICL, as no natural tissue is removed or changed (reshaped) in any way during implantation.
Another Benefit of the Staar Vision ICL is a UV blocker. Long-term exposure to UV radiation can damage the eyes; and longer term or more intense exposure increases the chance of eye disorders including the development of cataracts and some retinal problems. As an added feature, the Visian ICL advanced lens material contains a UV blocker that actually prevents harmful UVA and UVB rays from entering the eye, possibly preventing the development of UV related eye disorders.
Over fifteen years of research and development has made the Visian ICL a leader in phakic IOL technology. Worldwide there have been over 125,000 Visian ICL implants performed, and when asked about the procedure, over 99% of the patients were highly satisfied.
The Staar Visian ICL offers a wide treatment range for many patients. It has also proven to be successful in patients within a wide range of refractive errors. In fact, the Visian ICL can correct myopia from as low as -3.0 diopters to -16.0 diopters and reduce myopia from -16.0 diopters up to as high as -20.0 diopters with or without astigmatism. Before now, some of these individuals were not candidates for surgical eye correction. Clinical studies have shown how the Visian ICL is truly a breakthrough myopia treatment in terms of vision correction results. Because implantation of the phakic IOL does not require any structural alteration of the eye, results are predictable and very stable.
