Nerdy, shy English major Adam is surprised and thrilled when sexy art student Evelyn takes an interest in him—an interest that leads to a makeover of his life. Under Evelyn’s direction, Adam begins to work out, buys contact lenses, and even has plastic surgery. At first Adam’s friends Philip and Jenny are impressed by Evelyn’s positive influence, but when they begin to feel she’s gone too far, Evelyn orders Adam to abandon them. When his transformation is complete, Adam finds out that his relationship with Evelyn was about something other than love, and is left to ponder whether he is better or worse for having known her.

Artistic Director Rich Ferraioli brings his minimalist approach to this well known Neil LaBute play. With the help of designer R. Allen Babcock, Ferraioli creates a world where we constantly look at ourselves on display. We search or ponder for what it all means and how each decision in our lives impacts everything. LaBute’s play was originally produced in 2001 at the Almeida Theatre in London starring Paul Rudd and Rachel Weisz. It has since been turned into a movie directed by Mr. LaBute himself.

VTG’s production stars Deven Anderson as Phillip, Alice Bahlke as Evelyn, Kirk Gostkowski as Adam, and Melissa Haley Smith as Jenny. It is produced by Kieran Dotti and features scenic art by Stephanie Ferraioli. This production of Neil LaBute’s "The Shape of Things" marks the debut of Variations Theatre Group, a new company dedicated to producing exciting interpretations of modern American classics and original works.

ABOUT VARIATIONS THEATRE GROUP
Variations Theatre Group, Inc. was founded with the principle belief that theatre is meant to be challenging, engaging, and should push the boundaries of audience expectations. In VTG productions, the text and the actor are the most important thing; spectacle isn’t allowed to distract from the intentions of the playwright and performers. The company will give emerging artists the opportunity to work on the classic American plays that audiences have come to love, but in productions reinvigorated by the distinct VTG style. Time will also be devoted to the development of original works by new playwrights.

Because VTG’s members believe in the transformative power of theatre, one of the company’s goals is to bring productions to places where people don’t have access to professional theatre. Additionally, each production will have a “pay what you can” night, in order to ensure that economics will not be a barrier to potential audience members.
