With the Olympics over, we thought we were done with photo finishes, but “A Serious Man” turned out a come-from-behind victory when it nabbed the Golden Trailer Award™'s Honorary “Best Trailer For Best Picture Nominee” in the last two days of a five-week polling period. The promo for the Coen Bros. title beat out “Avatar,” which had been favored to prevail.
This special award was created to celebrate the expansion of the Oscars’™ Best Picture field. It will be given out tonight at a celeb-studded party at the Andaz Hotel on Sunset Boulevard, co-sponsored by Premiere.com and Jack Daniels. The event will be hosted by actor-comedian Dean Edwards ("SNL"), and the award will be presented by actor Ryan Devlin, who has been cast to lead opposite William Shatner in the pilot for "S**t My Dad Says." The invitation-only event, which runs 10pm-1am, is part of Haven360, a series of pre-Oscar events and VIP services, produced by Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S.
The winner of the “Best Trailer for Best Picture Nominee” was selected by public vote on the website of Premiere.com. Evelyn Brady-Watters, Executive Director of the Golden Trailer Awards™, recounts that “The competition has been online since February 3rd and until two days ago, ‘Avatar’ was dominating with a steady 28% . Then, this Tuesday, after the trades ran a mention of the party, ‘A Serious Man’ started to move ahead. By the time voting had closed at noon today, organizers were stunned to find that ‘A Serious Man’ had not only made A Serious Comeback, but had won the ‘Best Trailer for Best Picture’ by 6 percentage points.”
The winning trailer was created by Mark Woollen & Associates. Myles Bender, Senior Vice President, Creative Advertising at Focus Features is the executive in charge of the campaign. He and Mark Woollen are co-creative directors. Scott Mitsui produced and Ben Jackson edited. Al Silvestri, VP, Corporate Marketing & Creative Services of Premiere.com, noted, "Our readership is passionate and knowledgeable about movies, and we got great response from on this poll. Some 36,000 people took part. It was a lot of fun.”
