Drury University Adds Social Media to Online Course Offerings

Drury University, a nationally accredited institution of higher learning, has recently added a Social Media Certificate program that is available to students holding a bachelor's degree and desiring graduate credit hours. The webinar course of the graduate level social media program will begin on July 5th. Like the on-campus class, it will provide rigorous hands-on training as well as a review of social media best practices and research.

Successful completion of the course will result in a social media certificate from Drury demonstrating academic training in social media from an accredited university. The graduate credit hours from the Social Media Certificate program are also transferable to other college graduate programs.

To assure a solid, in-depth review of the social media curriculum, Deltina Hay, author of "A Survival Guide to Social Media and Web 2.0 Optimization," will facilitate the online webinar course teaching students how to use social media and Web 2.0 technologies.

Drury University offers both on-campus classes and the online class as a means of providing education in new media to students in public relations, journalism, marketing, advertising and business careers.

"Drury recognizes that brand building and marketing have transformed as a result of social media and Web 2.0 practices," comments Dr. Curt Gilstrap, Director of Drury's Master of Arts in Communication. "We would be remiss if we did not offer students an academic course that will prepare them to understand and work within a new media landscape. Many students need digital skills to be marketable to future employers and to enhance current professional capacities."

Students will develop technology skills while designing and piloting social media campaigns. The goal is for students to gain media management skills and to master integrated media.

"No doubt, companies are seeking educated employees trained in the latest technologies," comments Hay. "Social media can be overwhelming. A reliable guide book simplifies the entire process. My text serves as a resource during the course so the students can return to it and the companion CD for support - when they are actually implementing social media applications.."

Scheduled to begin on July 5th, the 40-hour training will allow students to gain a social media certificate. The course offers three graduate credit hours toward Drury's Master of Arts in Communication, which is transferable to other accredited institutions. The tuition of $2,000 is less than the cost of similar collegiate programs.
