Persistence of Negative Phase of North Atlantic Oscillation and Recent Rainfall over European Mainland to Discourage Significant or Sustained Heat

WSI (Weather Services International) expects temperatures for the approaching period (July-September) to average lower than normal across most of Scandinavia and parts of the northern mainland, with above-normal temperatures across the rest of the mainland and in the UK.

“We expect the recent cool weather across Scandinavia and parts of the northern mainland to continue through July and into August, with any significant heat remaining confined to the southern mainland. By September, we expect a reversal of the pattern with above-normal temperatures becoming established across Scandinavia and more widespread below-normal temperatures across the southern regions. Our recent concerns about exceedingly dry and hot conditions developing across Iberia and France have abated in recent weeks due to copious rainfall; and we feel there is little chance of extreme and sustained heat anywhere in Europe this summer. The recent historic persistence of the negative phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) shows no signs of abating. So, no sustained heat can build across the UK, northern mainland or Scandinavia until this pattern changes,” said WSI Chief Meteorologist, Dr. Todd Crawford.

In July, WSI predicts regional temperature anomalies as follows:
Scandinavia – Cooler than normal
UK – Cooler than normal
Northern Mainland – Cooler than normal
Southern Mainland – Warmer than normal

In August, WSI sees the monthly breakdown as:
Scandinavia – Cooler than normal
UK – Warmer than normal
Northern Mainland – Warmer than normal
Southern Mainland – Warmer than normal

In September, WSI forecasts:
Scandinavia – Warmer than normal
UK – Warmer than normal
Northern Mainland – Cooler than normal
Southern Mainland – Cooler than normal

WSI, providing customized weather information to energy traders, will issue its next seasonal outlook for the August-October period on 19 July.
