the last two or three weeks of the campaign, you'll see advertisements telling you the worst things about opponents that you probably shouldn't believe, but when you see them over and over again they do have effect . . . and you'll see a lot of that.
Danvers, MA (Vocus) November 1, 2010
Bill Hudak, http://www.hudakforcongress.com, candidate for U.S. Congress in the Massachusetts 6th Congressional District, has received an audio recording of Congressman John Tierney seemingly admitting his plan to engage in a campaign of negative advertising during the closing weeks of the election, but telling voters not to believe these ads. Tierney has received widespread criticism for his decision to air an attack ad about Bill Hudak, and was taken to court because of this television advertisement.
John Tierney in his own words said, “the last two or three weeks of the campaign, you’ll see advertisements telling you the worst things about opponents that you probably shouldn’t believe, but when you see them over and over again they do have effect . . . and you’ll see a lot of that.” This statement was delivered on September 20, 2010 during a presentation at Brooksby Village, in Peabody, Massachusetts, a senior living facility housing some 1800 residents. This was approximately 30 days before the Congressman’s television advertisement aired attacking Bill Hudak and before his wife Patrice was charged and convicted for aiding and abetting an allegedly illegal online gambling operation. “On October 19, 2010, Congressman John Tierney kept the promise made in his statement by running his only network advertisement of the entire campaign season, with only false, negative comments about me and nothing positive about himself, running it more than 500 times to date, at a cost exceeding $575,000,” said Bill Hudak. “He also sent out three campaign fliers, each one more negative than the prior one, and all of them filled with outright lies,” Hudak said.
“Mr. Tierney’s false smear campaign is conduct unbefitting a Congressman,” Hudak said. “It is obvious that since he has never successfully sponsored one bill that made its way out of committee in 14 years, votes 98% of the time the way the Democratic Party tells him to, is ranked in the bottom ten percent in effectiveness in Congress, and does little other than show up at ribbon cutting ceremonies to take credit where none is due, he could not run on issues or his record. John Tierney’s only option was to air a television commercial and send mailers falsifying where I stand in an effort to deceive the voters.”
“I’m running for Congress to take the politics out of politics,” Hudak said. “My vision for this country is one of positive energy; to restore jobs; and to put America back on track. Creating jobs will take reducing taxes on businesses and individuals alike, to restore confidence in our free enterprise system so the economy can start moving again. This Congress has done the opposite for two years now, and it’s time to focus its attention on getting government out of the way,” Hudak said. “We can’t expect our problems to be solved by those who created them in the first place.”
Regarding Tierney’s television claim that Hudak intends to eliminate the mortgage interest deduction, Hudak stated “it’s an outright fabrication and something I never said. I plainly stated that my goal is to reduce taxes on the middle class from 40% to 15%; how that translates into destroying the middle class or leads Congressman Tierney to say I intend to wipe out the home mortgage deduction is beyond understanding.”
When asked about education, Hudak stated, “I believe that the education of our children has to be a top priority, and to that end I favor restoring management of our public schools to the parents at the local level so they can make the right decisions for their children and to be sure that funds actually reach the children, not bureaucrats. I believe in strengthening college opportunities through increased funding and Pell grants, and to stop Congress and my opponent from taking $19 Billion from the college loan program and siphoning it off to pay for Obamacare; the same way that Congress took $2.5 Trillion from Social Security to use for other purposes,” Hudak said.
“We must look deep within ourselves to restore the fundamental values on which this country was based; our Constitution, freedom, free enterprise, and a sense that in America hard work, not entitlements, is the only way we can remain the strongest nation on earth. We must honor our veterans, protect our seniors, enable our youth, and renew the promise that is uniquely America by our deeds, not by political rhetoric words which all too often are uttered to win votes and never followed up with action,” Hudak commented.
“As a person who believes that the government works for us, not the other way around, my pledge to work for the people is an unshakable part of who I am, and a vote for me is a vote for the American way of life,” Hudak concluded.
