The Home Security Guru Michigan crime report shows a decline in all types of crimes recorded by the state and federal government. But that doesn't mean state officials are letting up on the fight against crime. Michigan Governor Rick Synder fiscal year 2012 budget included a $47 million increase to the state's general fund for additional support of different law enforcement facets such as forensic science and improving aging equipment. In response to the increased funds Director of the Michigan State Police Kriste Kibbey Etue stated, "it is unacceptable that four Michigan cities consistently appear among the nation's top 10 most violent. The Michigan State Police looks forward to working alongside the governor to improve safety for our citizens."

Michigan Cities with the Highest Crime Rates

Crime rates vary significantly from one city to the next in Michigan and are heavily influenced by population. According to the Michigan State Police preliminary Uniform Crime Report the Michigan cities with the highest number of crimes in 2011 are:

  •     Detroit - 3,630
  •     Flint - 3,546
  •     Lansing - 2200
  •     Grand Rapids - 1,745
  •     Warren - 1,625
  •     Ann Arbor - 1,081
  •     Sterling Heights - 794
