PLos Angeles (PRWEB) January 5, 2011
On January 12, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Montage Hotel in Los Angeles, Ludus Athletics and the U.S. Association for UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency, will host a star-studded event to inform area philanthropists about ongoing and urgent relief efforts in Pakistan. Flooding there has impacted an area the size of California, destroying the homes, farms and businesses of millions of people and complicating the work of the international community. UNHCR Ambassador Angelina Jolie will also deliver a videotaped message talking about the urgent relief and international donor support needed to help the 20 million people affected, including Afghan refugees living in Pakistan.
Afghan-American Hamed Wardak, CEO of Ludus Athletics said, “The UN Refugee Agency's aid to Afghan refugees who have been displaced by the Pakistan floods is a cause that's close to my heart. So many members of the Afghan Diaspora are refugees in one way or another. I am pleased that I can give back, particularly through Ludus Athletics, my new eco-friendly, socially conscious active wear line.”
Evening hosts include Pam Omidyar, the wife of eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, Khaled Hosseini, author of “The Kite Runner,” the host of the Afghan TV program “Mozhdah,” Mozhdah Jamalzadah, the Chairman and Founder of the Afghanistan World Foundation Sonia Nassery Cole, former General Hospital actress Azita Ghanizada as well as Hamed Wardak.
“There are few disasters that rival the devastation caused by the flooding last year in Pakistan," said Vincent Cochetel, United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) Representative for the United States and the Caribbean. "For decades, UNHCR's role in Pakistan has been to assist Afghan refugees, but faced with an emergency of this magnitude, it was clear we had to join the relief effort."
The event will feature a fashion show of Ludus Athletics active wear, a silent auction and a presentation by the UN Refugee Agency’s top representative in North America, Vincent Cochetel, about the organization’s success and challenges in Pakistan and the region as well as about the Blue Key campaign, a new initiative to build awareness of the UN’s work with refugees.
