HR professionals face a new year filled with hot-button issues and controversy, between the EEOC's intense scrutiny on hiring practices and a tidal wave of new legislation for credit checks and employee screening policies.

HR professionals and small business leaders can learn how to avoid discrimination claims in the hiring process and other legal dangers in a new webcast hosted by EmployeeScreenIQ and featuring expert Pamela Q. Devata of Seyfarth Shaw, LLP.

The January 25 webcast, presented by the global employment screening provider, will offer legal insights and best practices regarding background screening policies. Devata, a labor and employment law expert, will examine new policies from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which has increased its scrutiny of hiring practices, exposing employers to a greater risk of discrimination lawsuits.

Devata is a partner in the Labor and Employment Practice Group of Seyfarth Shaw, LLP. She specializes in all aspects of employment defense that includes litigation of state and federal court cases involving allegations of sex, race, and national origin discrimination and harassment.

The 45-minute webcast will also cover:

  • What employers need to know about the EEOC's E-RACE initiative (Eradicating Racism and Colorism from Employment)
  • Best practices related to adverse credit information and criminal history
  • Hiring controversies due to social networking
