The Watchman’s Rattle, recognized by Library Journal as the top science philosophy book of 2010, and one of the top “green” books of the year by ABC News affiliates, is en route to Hollywood.
“Interest comes as no surprise – except maybe to the author,” offered Adam Leipzig, an expert on emerging culture and the former President of National Geographic Films. “Last week she reached out to ask if I could help her field queries that have been streaming in since the book was released three months ago. There’s some great potential here.”
The author, Rebecca Costa, attributes the surge of interest in film rights to thought leaders who have stepped forward with deeply personal endorsements: Sir Richard Branson, Dr. Edward O. Wilson, Trudie Styler, Temple Grandin, Senator Bill Bradley, Dr. James Watson, Donald Trump and others. In addition, during the first few weeks of the book’s release, it was selected as the Pick of the Week on CNN’s Larry King Live, featured in The New York Times, Inc. Magazine, The Huffington Post, The Guardian, San Jose Mercury News, on NPR and was critically reviewed on over one hundred web sites.
On February 3, The Watchman’s Rattle is slated to be released in the United Kingdom and Australia by Random House/Virgin Books, followed by translated versions in China, Korea, Brazil and other international markets. According to former President of the Screen Actor’s Guild, Edward Asner, “There are very few truly ‘new’ ideas these days. Though the book has gotten off to a remarkable start, everyone knows the best way to get a wider audience is film. The fact that the largest publishers in the world picked it up indicates a strong global market. That’s the sort of thing that excites everybody.”
Actor, Harrison Ford agrees. At a recent fundraiser in Silicon Valley where Costa was a key presenter, Ford was asked about the author’s controversial work. “She’s already a star – she just doesn’t know it,” he commented.
For now, Costa seems content explaining the biological reasons for global gridlock by lecturing across the country and over the airways as host of her own weekly radio show (appropriately named Rattler Radio). She sums up the book’s potential to become a major motion picture by saying, “Frankly, I don’t know one thing about making a movie. It didn’t take but a minute to realize I wasn’t even capable of separating a real offer from one that would lead nowhere. But with Adam’s (Leipzig) help, I now have confidence the book will find its way into the right hands. In the end, that’s what’s important.”
About The Watchman’s Rattle
The Watchman’s Rattle is a lead title by Vanguard Press, a member of the Perseus Books Group, and was released nationwide on October 12, 2010. It speaks to our ability to thrive in the complex world we have created. It posits that the escalating complexity of our personal lives, technological capabilities, and governmental policies have led to conditions that have outpaced our ability to manage them – such as worldwide recession, global warming, and pandemic viruses. However, Costa offers an opportunity to address these challenges, by revealing scientific evidence that the human brain can be retrained to solve massively complex problems.
